Moms Answer my FAQs
I, as you could probably tell, am full of opinions. However, as a first-time mom and first-time teacher, I have a lot of questions. Below are some of my questions that I have asked experienced teachers and/or moms, and some of the answers I have come upon through both conversations and through experience. I will try to remember to put astericks next to answers I have yet to test on my own daughter.
What kind of writing utensil should I start with?
I can, from experience, tell you starting with a pen is not a good idea. They really don't have great contact with the paper (especially gel pens) and are harder for a new learner to grasp. A similar question I asked was if it was alright to start with the thick, triangular crayons. The response to this question has so far been a resounding yes. It helps learners to develop good habits (supposedly-- they are on my list of materials to buy), and crayons are a very commonly recommended first writing tool. Thick markers and crayons are both highly recommended (don't forget that they should be washable).
My daughter holds the pencil differently. What are acceptable variances on the traditional pencil hold?*
While my daughter does not hold the pencil as I do nor as I would, she does hold it in a manner that makes me wonder if some people do hold it that way and if teachers accept her hold as an acceptable variance on the norm (she holds it just like I would but adds a second finger on top and secures it with a fourth finger-- a kind of quadripod hold). I am waiting to get some answers on this one.
According to one site, "An efficient grasp the pencil is held between the pads of the thumb and index finger while resting on the middle finger. An acceptable variation of this is when the pencil is held between the pads of the thumb and index/middle fingers while resting on the ring finger."
