The First Workbooks
We are starting out with three workbooks plus the reading she and I will do together beyond the workbooks. I appreciate comments and suggestions on things (curriculum, books, activities) that may add to our experience and support her in these next couple of years.
Sylvan Learning: Super Games and Puzzles; GRADE K
This book has a variety of activities. In some ways it may seem hard to maneuver. The variety is great and the first letter area is good and fairly self-explanitory, but when you go into the other topics it is kind of mixed up and there aren't as many activities for those who do not yet read. Still, the activities are colorful and fun. This is one book you would want to go through in order from first page to last.
BrainQuest: Kindergarten
My daughter loves this book. You can really get a lot done in one day from this book, as it has a lot of different subjects and one does not rely on the other (i.e. a science lesson would always not require knowing how to read words). Some, of course, do overlap and use words and letters, but this allows for a more full day of learning. It also comes with stickers AND a cut-out mini BrainQuest deck of cards for portable studies and learning. It is a mini deck, so not like their full decks at different levels, but it is a neat thing for parents to have.
School Zone: BIG Workbook: Ages 5-6 K
This is actually my favorite. Although I am on my first day with all of these books and opinions may change, I like that this book starts by teaching children to trace. I discovered very quickly with my daughter that she likes to CREATE and was not so accustomed to TRACING. This book got her tracing on the first day, though we are still working on the ways things are traced, points and curves, where to start and stop. And this book helps even with this -- with knowing where to start the pen and which direction to go. This is great for beginners and is the perfect balance of ease and challenge.
I am waiting on getting my printer back online and to get some ink and I have a ton of printouts to print as well. I think most of them request that we don't include the direct attachments, but I will eventually add my favorite resource sites on here, and I do indeed already have some favorites!
